A photographic image of a mother and daughter in the rain

Altouugh we can't see the mother's face in this photo, we see her slender hands holding an umbrella to protect her young daughter while most of her own body is exposed to the weather. [Photographer: Jupi Lu. Photo courtesy of Pixabay.com]

As a widow, my mother brought up my older sister and me with only the help from our church family. Although she worked full time, she took us to church twice every Sunday, once every Wednesday evening and occasionally for other events during the week. It was challengenging for her to do all that because the did not own a car. Consequently, we depended on the city bus system and on the kindness of other church members to get us to and from church. Instead of taking her one full day off from work to relax on Sunday, she tended to our spiritual needs. That was in addition to cooking our meals, doing our laundry, sewing clothes for us, paying bills, and looking after our health.

Like many prople that grew up in Christian homes, I didn't appreciate the uniqueness of my upbringing until I married and became a mother. Although my husband and I owned a car in which we could transport our son to church and Christian events, it required discipline on our part to take him there. That is when I appreciated the determined effort of my mother, her love and care, the value of the Christian environment she provided, and the kindness of our Christian friends.

It is the value of such a background the Apostle Paul pointed out to Timothy whom Paul mentored in preparation for teaching and preaching the Gospel. Paul reminded Timothy that he - Timothy - came from a line of believers that included his grandmother, Lois, and his mother Eunice. In 2 Timothy 1:5, Paul wrote to Timothy, "I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also." (NIV)

The scripture fells us that, "Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, his mother was Jewish and a believer but his father was a Greek.". (Acts 16:1, NIV). The fact that the Bible does not say that Timothy's father was also a believer leads us to the conclusion that he wasn't. That encourages me because, according to Paul, the absence of a believing earthly father didn't diminish Timothy's qualification for Christian service. It was enough that he had one believing parent and a believing grandparent. I hope that encourages you as well, whatever your background may be.

Prayer: Dear Lord, although I may not have always understood howYou arrange things, I thank You for blessing me with the preparatations that I needed for following the path you have set out for me. You always know best. In the name of Jesus, amen.
