When I had to drive my husband to a medical appointment in a suburb that was many miles from our home, I was apprehensive about the traffic because I knew that commuters on that road often drove faster than the speed limit. On subsequent trips, I learned to drive five miles under the speed limit so that other drivers had to go around me. A friend suggested that because other drivers were already going 10 miles over the speed limit, they were actually going 15 miles faster than I was!

As I thought about it, I realized that my intention to drive differently than others reflects the way that I live as a Christian. That's because, as a Christian, I can't live as others do. In order to live according to God's word, I must behave intentionally different from others.

The Bible advises that we do that in : "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

By not conforming to the ways of the world, I protect myself from potential mishaps. Others have noticed this and have asked me why I do things differently than most people do. That gives me the opportunity to tell them about my faith.

One woman came right out and asked me, "What religion are you?"

I was able to tell her, "I'm a Christian."

Her question told me that even when I don't intentionally try to witness to others, my everyday actions are my way of witnessing. In that way, I witness to others through my actions every day."

Prayer: Strengthening Lord, please give me the courage not to conform to the actions and habits of others but to follow your guidance. In the name of Jesus, amen.
