Our Daily Tortilla

My morning walk often provided a variety of sights and smells. [Photographer: Dani Myrick. Photo courtesy of Pixabay.com].
When we first moved to New Mexico, I often took a walk in the early morning. One particular path took me through a neighborhood where I regularly inhaled the unmistakable aroma of fresh, homemade, corn tortillas cooking. The flexibility of the flat surface of pounded, ground corn that has been moistened with a little water lends itself to being a base for a filling of meat, cheese, and beans along with onions and other vegetables. It didn't matter which day of the week I walked through that neighborhood, that same delicious smell greeted me every morning.

Inhaling that mouth-watering aroma reminded me of the words of the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6:7-14: 7) "And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8) Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9) This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10) your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11) Give us today our daily bread. 12) And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13) And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.' 14) "For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you". (NIV)
That request in verse 11, "Give us this day our daily bread," is for more than just temporary, immediate sustenance. Nor is it a request for food that is made in advance or food that is purchased each week or each month. Instead, it is a request for fresh food that comes to us each day. We can interpret those words to mean fresh spiritual and mental sustenance as well as fresh physical nourishment. We don’t have to be satisfied with stale insight that comes to us from other sources. We can ask God every morning for fresh guidance to sustain us spiritually and mentally as well as physically throughout the day. God provides us with fresh insight every day when we ask for it. For that, we should never fail to say, "Thank you".
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for granting our request for fresh nourishment to meet our physical, spiritual, and metal needs when we pray, "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen."
